“In a very limited space of time, and under difficult circumstances, my daughter reached the required standard to be offered places at four independent schools and a full bursary”
At what age should you think about hiring a tutor?
It depends on a number of factors. If you are planning to take 10 or 11+ independent school exams or secondary school entry tests, it is sensible to start tuition early in year 4, to allow for regular even progress.
My school tells me my child is in the top group in her class. Will I still need a tutor?
It depends on their current school and on where you aim to continue education. Schools tend to inflate the ability of their children, and in some schools being in the top group, while satisfying, may not indicate academic ability anywhere near the preferred level for school entry. Be wary, and get a tutor assessment for your child, or try out a few test papers for the school of your choice.
Can I teach my child myself and save on hiring a tutor?
Yes, you can certainly tutor your child yourself, using the wide range of books and teaching aids available. It will take dedicated effort and fluent English, and you will have to be sure to include all the necessary skills areas, such as Non-Verbal Reasoning and Maths. Be sure you realise the standard you need to reach and are realistic about how much time you can dedicate to this.
Do you teach older children?
Yes, we teach up to A-Level in certain subjects, GCSE in others.
Can children with special needs be coached to the entry standard of specific schools?
Perhaps. Tutors in this area usually charge higher fees as the work is more specialised, and more intensive. The real question is what school will provide what your child needs, followed by how to access this.
How many lessons will we need to pay for to make a difference?
It depends hugely on each individual child. Tuesday Tutors offers an initial trial assessment to determine how much study will be required to reach the standard needed for entry to your chosen schools. There will be further reassessments at the end of the first lesson block.
